Munich Women Drop Thriller to Robert Morris University

In a post-season scrimmage against NCAA Division I Robert Morris University, Munich fought hard and...

A mixture of nerves and excitement could be felt amongst the Munich A team players as they warmed up against what would be their toughest competition in the 2011-2012 season so far. However, any lingering uncertainties by game time were tossed away with the initial draw as Munich came out strong to challenge RMU in the midfield, force turnovers on defense and hold longer possessions on attack. RMU was first on the board, though, after four minutes, and would score again on a play off the Munich crease minutes after to take the lead 2-0.

At every moment in the match a spectator could claim this was anyone’s game as both teams traded shots and showed strong defensive stands versus a variety of offensive movements. Munich was able to tie the score eventually and even take a short-lived lead with 30 seconds left in the first half, but were caught out of position off the resulting draw leading to an immediate RMU fast break off the whistle and quick tying goal to even things at the half 4-4.

Coach Joe Kenworthy was pleased with his team at halftime and remarked on the speed and intensity the Munich women were showing compared to their last game day. RMU had undoubtedly the most difficult ride that Munich had seen thus far, forcing them to pass much quicker and play smarter with the ball in the midfield. The second half was similar to the first with RMU forcing Munich to earn their goals. Nora Schroeder and Tessa Helf had two goals each in the game, and Laura Koschorek and Eva Schulte each tallied a hard-fought-for point as well.

When the final whistle blew announcing the end to the friendly game, Munich’s effort in the 6-8 defeat left them able to hold their heads high. “We held our own against a solid Division I team and gave them a hard fight. We had two defensive penalties that led to scored goals off of free positions,” said Head Coach Joe Kenworthy. “That just shows our own mistakes can cost us games; but it's also something we can control and will work on.” Mistakes aside, Kenworthy had much praise for his team speaking highly about the composure shown on attack as well as the communication and team-play on defense. Special recognition and the game ball were given to standout goalie Sigrid Neubinger, who had a solid performance and stood strong in net.

Many thanks go out to the players, coaches and organizers from Robert Morris University and 'Celebrate the Sport' organization, who made this game possible; and of course to all the Munich fans on the sideline that made the difference to the players.

Munich will head to the German Playoffs in Hamburg on Friday May 18, to take on Frankfurt on Saturday followed by the winner of Hamburg vs. Blax (Berlin).
Munich Women Set to Face Robert Morris University

The Munich A Team women will square off against US NCAA Division I team Robert Morris University...

The scheduled scrimmage to take place at the HLC Rot-Weiß München is just one more element of the Munich team's preparations for the post-season. After finishing the regular season 12-0 and taking first place in the South Region (BLS), Munich is eager to play the Division I university team from Philadelphia, knowing the challenge that awaits them from the initial draw to the final whistle.

"We're excited to practice our defense," quipped midfielder Tessa (Tassi) Helf. As Munich Coach Joe Kenworthy warned his team of the athleticism of the young American university students, Helf will be one of the only Munich players within the same age range as the American team.

"It's definitely going to be the toughest competition these girls have seen this year," said Kenworthy, "but I'm confident that we can win this thing." Kenworthy has worked with the team throughout the season to control the tempo on attack and take some risks defensively. As of yet, the game plan for Thursday remains unchanged.

The friendly game will be used as challenging preparation for the German Playoff Tournament to take place May 19 and 20 in Hamburg. Munich will play Frankfurt in the first round.

The Robert Morris University Colonials are part of the Northeast Conference (NEC) and finished their 2012 season 7-10. The NEC also hosts the Davidson Women's Lacrosse team, whom Munich will take on as well at home on May 27.

Munich Women Return from Successful Weekend

The women's A team wins two league games and two friendly games to cap-off a perfect 12-0 season.

The Munich A Team women closed out their 2011/2012 South Region (BLS) games with a 23-0 shutout against Karlsruhe and an 18-2 win against second

place BLS team Heidelberg.

Battling the elements, the women jumped off to a quick lead against Karlsruhe and controlled the game from there. Slick conditions affected both teams on the field, and Munich had to adjust its passing quickly around damp pockets and strong gusts of wind. They maintained consistency, though, with forcing turnovers in the midfield and setting the pace on attack, to come through for the victory.

The intermittent rain and wind continued as Munich faced their final and toughest BLS competitor immediately after. Heidelberg did not disappoint, and came out fighting strong to take a 1-0 lead during its first posession in Munich territory. Though fully aware of Heidelberg's athleticism and capabilities, the Munich women remained undaunted to score the next goal and tie the game 1-1. The game remained competitive from both sides and stayed close in the opening half, until Munich eventually pulled away one hard-fought point at a time to lead the game 9-2 at half time.

During the break, coach Joe Kenworthy made adjustments on defense and advised his attack to settle down. "We don't always have to make things so hard for ourselves," he told his team and sent them out in the second half with instructions to demonstrate more patience on offense. The defense, backed up by a stellar performance from goalie Sigrid Neubinger, adjusted quickly from the first half and were able to hold onto the game without allowing another point, taking the game 18-2 as 2012 BLS victors.

After the official completion of regular season games, Munich set off immediately to prepare for its postseason preparations by traveling to Frankfurt for scrimmages (2 x 20 minute halves, running clock) against fellow upcoming playoff participants Blax (Berlin), a Düsseldorf-Heidelberg mix and Frankfurt. The Sunday morning weather, which began sunny, proved to be as unpredictable and troublesome as the previous day's, and Munich faced its first opponent as the cold rain began to fall.

Blax came out strong and showed off a quick upfield transition off a turnover in the first half that led to a 1-0 lead. Stunned by its unfamiliar competitors, Munich dug deep to earn back the goal and eventually pull through to a 6-2 win. The next game versus Düsseldorf/Heidelberg began similarly with Munich falling quickly by a point before finding its rhythm and working its way to a 7-2 win.

In the third and final game of the busy weekend, Munich once again started down in points as Frankfurt capitalized on a free position to take the early lead 1-0. They would score again off a fast break opportunity that resulted in a shot from what seemed an impossible angle, right past Neubinger's hip. Munich pulled themselves together and low attacker Lisa Schulte was able to put them on the board, just before the first bolt of lightning was spotted.

Only partially through the first half, both teams gathered to discuss the situation and mutually agreed to call the game as strong winds and drop in temperature signaled an imminent downpour before exchanging well wishes. It had been a great team experience for the Munich women and much of the high spirits of the weekend were attributed to the great competition and sportsmanship they met in the five teams they encountered.

"Even though the reason we're all here was to play competitively as everyone wants to prepare for playoffs," remarked midfielder Adriane Castrinakis, "the mood among all the teams was really positive towards each other. Everyone was just enjoying this opportunity to play good lacrosse- and you could feel it. It was a really fun weekend."

Despite having to cancel the last game against Frankfurt down in points, the Munich team was positive about its performance. "We finished our season undefeated and these friendly games were used to try new things, reinforce old concepts and identify areas we still need to work on," said Kenworthy. "Plus, we were just about to make our comeback," he joked.

The Munich A Team in its 12 league games has scored 208 points, while only allowing 5 against. As the first place BLS team they will face the second place team in the West Region (BLW) at the German Playoffs May 19 and 20 in Hamburg. The opponent will be either Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, to be decided on May 6 when the two teams play each other.

Munich A Women Prepare for Five Games in Upcoming Weekend

The Women's A team will set off for a game-packed weekend, finishing off its regular season and...

The Munich A Women (10-0) look to extend their winning streak this Saturday as they face their final competitors in the South Region (BLS), Heidelberg (9-1) and Karlsruhe (4-4), in Heidelberg. Munich stands in first place currently, with Heidelberg trailing by only three points and two games also left to play.

Following the league games, Munich will travel to and spend the night in Frankfurt before scrimmaging the current leaders in the East (BLO) and West (BLW) Regions, Berlin (Blax) and Frankfurt, respectively, on Sunday. A third scrimmage is also scheduled against a Düsseldorf/Heidelberg mix, as Düsseldorf currently shares the first place BLW lead with Frankfurt.

The Munich team will practice Friday night as usual to prepare for the upcoming five games, and looks forward to facing its competitors this weekend. "I think the girls are excited to play teams on Sunday we haven't seen yet this season," said Coach Joe Kenworthy, "but of course, we're focusing on Saturday first and finishing out the regular season games in the BLS strong."

With Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Blax already guaranteed playoff appearances, it is certain that Munich will face at least one of these teams at the tournament to be held in Hamburg in May. For right now though, the team is just enjoying every opportunity to play together and being able to continue implementing concepts from the year.
